The Ernst Patzer Foundation is awarding up to three prizes each year for the best refereed publications by doctoral students and young postdocs at MPIA and ZAH. In 2022, Jaeyeon Kim, PhD researcher at ZAH/ITA, is among the awardees.
She receives this prize for her paper on Environmental dependence of the molecular cloud lifecycle in 54 main sequence galaxies (2022, Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society 504, 487).
Jaeyeaon Kim studies giant molecular clouds, which have long been recognized as an important sight for star formation. Massive stars inject mass, momentum, and energy into the surrounding interstellar medium which ultimately lead to the disruption of the clouds. It is important to understand this chain of events as they shape the properties of galaxies by regulating the galaxy-wide star formation processes.
To investigate the lifecycle of molecular clouds, she applied a newly developed statistical method to a large number of galaxies covering a broad range of environments as a part of PHANGS-ALMA Large Programme. This allowed her to quantify how the feedback processes and lifecycle of molecular clouds depend on the galactic environment. Kim works in the research group of Dr. Mélanie Chevance (ZAH/ITA).
Furthermore, two other scientist are honored with the Patzer Prize: Jakob Isbell for The dusty heart of Circinus. I. Imaging the circumnuclear dust in N-band (2022, Astronomy & Astrophysics, 663, A35), and Ekaterina Magg for Observational constraints on the origin of the elements: IV. Standard composition of the Sun (2022, Astronomy & Astrophysics 661, A140)
The award winners will be honored during the Patzer Colloquium on November 25th, 2022, at 15:00 in the MPIA Lecture Hall.
